Alpenglow is home to a wide variety of animals. Some can be dangerous to the cats, while others are good sources of prey. AVIAN The coastline is home to puffins, seals of various species, sea lions, otters, and plover. Puffins can generally be taken down by a large Duskclan cat, though some may require hunting in pairs. If times are tough, cats will sometimes take puffin eggs for extra sustenance. Plover are generally an easy catch, as they are small shorebirds. Ptarmigan can also be found in Duskclan territory, though they are not exclusive to the shore and can be found throughout Alpenglow, as with other common birds like ravens, eagles, and various other raptors. Owls are common throughout the tundra and the woods, rarely seen on the coast. AQUATIC The seals and sea lions that can be found along the coast are generally not dangerous, and are too slow to be much of a threat to Duskclan cats. From the rocky cliffs one can sometimes see whales swimming, and occasionally one is beached, bringing predators to Duskclan's territory. This can be both dangerous and auspicious, as smaller predators may be taken down as prey when Duskclanners hunt in groups.Duskclan cats often catch small fish in tide pools, such as sand eels, herring, hake, and capelin. They can also find shrimp at times. PREDATORS The tundra is home to arctic hares and the lynxes that hunt them, though Glacierclan cats often go after them as well. As lynx are mainly solitary creatures, they don't typically bother the cats, but have taken them for prey during harsh winters or if cats are out alone in dangerous conditions. Polar bears can be found on ice floes near the shore as well as on the tundra, as well as numerous other types of bears; brown bears, grizzly bears, and black bears. Bears other than the polar bear can be found throughout the woods, and rarely bears may venture up toward tribe land when looking for a place to hibernate. UNGULATES Herds of caribou roam the tundra and sometimes graze in the woods. Moose are particularly fond of the bogs, dwelling near wetlands and typically being found in groups of just one or two, especially a mother and her calf. Deer are abundant on the island, found in every part of the terrain. Mountain goats are primarily found throughout tribe territory, up in the highlands. Muskox tend to also prefer the higher climes. RODENTS There are many rodents that can be found across the island. Ground squirrels and wood rats are most commonly found in the woods, though mink and weasels, sometimes dwelling on the tundra, can be caught in the woods as well. Gophers are widespread across the island. Marmots can be found in mountainous terrain and in woods, while pikas are found exclusively at the highest altitudes, mostly near to the tribe. CANINES On a small island just off the edge of Alpenglow lives a pack of wolves. Wolves may occur in pairs throughout the island, but are more rare. Coyotes are seen more often, as well as arctic and red foxes. Canines can be a threat to the cats, and may actively hunt cats if necessary for their own survival. |
